About Joey L. Beyer MD, MSLIS
It would be an understatement to say I have a passion for wellness. I began my personal experience with wellness in December of 2006 when I joined a group of friends in a biggest loser style competition. Having been overweight my whole life, and already experiencing daily lower back pain, I decided it was time for a change. I was 20 years old and could have been in the best shape of my life, but I was in the worst shape of my life and getting worse every day. While my team did not win the competition, I lost almost 50 pounds. I would go on to lose over 100 pounds by my college graduation in 2008.
Needless to say, that experience changed my life. I went from being shy and timid to confident and poised. I felt like there was nothing I could not do. To this day I honestly believe that to be true. This is not because things are easy for me, but because I proved to myself that I can do it. That attitude allowed me to graduate from one of the top library schools in the country, and go on to graduate from medical school. However, the most important thing I learned from that experience is that you have to do it for yourself and no-one else.
I love helping others reach their goals, and I believe wellness is instrumental to doing so. To achieve wellness, you have to take care of yourself first and foremost. This requires vigilance, perseverance, and, most importantly, a commitment to yourself. Only then can you go forward to achieve your goals and help others achieve their’s too.
